Microsofts licensing view on virtualization changed, finally.

As several bloggers around already menstion, here(Danish), here, and other places. Microsoft has finally come to their senses and are now supporting a large list of their application in virtualized environments.

Some of the included applications are:

  • Exchange
  • SQL
  • Sharepoint

And ofcourse alot of others. but have a look at the Microsoft pressrelease here:

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2008/aug08/08-19EasyPathPR.mspx

The main changes for all these platforms are technical support and licensing improvement as it is now allowed to migrate applications from hardware to hardware more than once every 90 days! so bye bye 90-days rule! Yipii!

The vendors which have taken part in the Windows Server Virtualization Validation Program are:

  • Cisco Systems, Inc.
  • Citrix Systems, Inc.
  • Novell, Inc.
  • Sun Microsystems
  • Virtual Iron Software
  • VMware

VMware however slow did make it to the list of approved vendors ;-)
