The blog..

For a while there i actually thought Provisioning Server was going to be too expensive for massive deployment, a strong tool only meant for the large organisations. However with the new releases and updates it seems the strategy has changed to target a wider deployment.

So where is the Provisioning Services being included in existing products(as far as i have heard for now):

XenApp Platinum Customers will receive Provisioning Service for Physical XenApp Servers
Update: i was corrected that this also goes for virtual servers, but only XenApp, no WI,SQL, exchange etc.(thanks to Chrisitan Fenneberg for actually reading what i write not what i think i wrote)

Citrix Essentials for XenServer Enterprise will receive Provisioning Service for the Virtual Machines running on the Host

Citrix Essentials for XenServer Platinum will receive Provisioning Service for Virtual and Physical machines

Features

Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V Enterprise and Platinum will receive Provisioning Service for Virtual Machines on the Hyper-V host

I do think this will make a difference as i definitely think Provisioning Services(server) will be able to save money on the management of XenApp Server.

Thanx Joe for the heads-up and thanx to Nicolai Jensen and Christian Luckow for the help in clearing up the details :-)

I do believe this is incorrect.

Essentials for XenServer Enterprise does not include an type on entitlement for Provisioning Server.

Also, for XenApp Platinum licenses you can provision to physical and virtual. It does not matter.

Hi, Rene – don’t forget that provisioning services are also a core part of XenDesktop! It provides both storage savings for creating hosted virtual desktops as well as single image management. And with XenDesktop 3, it can also stream desktops directly to endpoints to leverage the local power while maintain centralized management of the image.

Hey Calvin, thanx for the comment, you are right it is a cool factor and i will be trying to take a look at the different options for purchasing products :) it seems now its possible to buy the features you need in different ways to best accomodate the needs of the organisation at the right price :-)

Looks like Citrix updated the feature comparison Matrix (today, no less) to clarify this and your matrix is correct. I think it’s great that they’ve added this into Enterprise, but very sloppy marketing.

    Great job on the site!
