And i never found a good description on how to get it running but it seems the nut have been cracked. Citrix CTP Alexander Ervik published a guide on his site: www.ervik.as His site is definitely worth a look and i keep up to date on his site.

Thanx for the guide Alexander..

So.. Citrix and Microsoft announced a joint venture a while back. They wanted to give their customers the opportunity to deliver microsoft core components and WAN optimization to smaller branch offices. And well, this is nothing new, however the thought was to deliver these ressources to the branch office in a simple way, even in case of a WAN outage, and it would seem they succeeded.

The Citrix Branch Repeater delivers things like:

DHCP

Domain Authentication(Domain Controller role)

DNS

DFS, Giving the opportunity to deliver shares to branch offices but only having to worry about Backup centrally.

WAN optimization based on WANScaler technology(requires WANScaler og Branch Repeater on the other end)

Staging of XenApp Streaming packages allowing users to launch streamed applications without having to fetch the package over the WAN.

All these features are based on a Windows Server 2003 R2 and management will be done centrally and integrated with WMI and fully integrated with Microsoft System Center Operations Manager. All this allows for the CBR’s to be administrated centrally.

And on the connectivity side of things Citrix has listened and to set it up, it is mainly to just connect it to the network infrastructure. IP could be configured before shipping from the Datacenter.

Citrix Branch Repeater is available in 3 models at the moment

100

Citrix Branch Repeater for WAN links up to 1 Mbps

200

Citrix Branch Repeater for WAN links up to 2 Mbps

300

Citrix Branch Repeater for WAN links up to 10 Mbps

The Citrix Branch Repeater also comes with an optional extra for ISA server web caching and i think it would be safe to assume we will see even more options in the future.

Rumors would indicate this appliance is going to have competition from other vendors like Cisco, but for now Citrix is out and with the best product.

And as i have not seen it yet i will not go into too much detail but rumor has it that next generation is going to have XenApp ICA Optimization!! what do you know, the protocol that could not be optimized is now being optimized by a factor 10?.. I will write more on this when i see it in action but again, just a factor 2 would be nice for some locations.

So it seems Citrix is launching a regular attack on the Access Gateway Enterprise product.

It seems that the new Citrix Netscaler Standard edition will include alot of cool features for the customers who were thinking netscaler but didnt know if they could afford it

Some of the new features:

Global Server Load Balancing(GSLB)

Access Gateway Enterprise(yes, now included in standard, nice way to save a few thousand dollars )

Intelligent load balancing of XenApp WI and XML-Brokers

Citrix Netscaler standard has always been the entry level product an in my oppinion it used to be good for nothing more than a bit of ssl offloading, load balancing of webservices, and a bit of ssl vpn. And in my book it was a bit overpriced for these ‘simple’ tasks.

However with the new features i think Citrix Netscaler standard edition is actually opening up for even danish-sized companies.

GSLB

Global Server Load Balancing is the functionality to allow load balancing between different sites, this could be used for throttling connections between different datacenters or simply to have a dynamic failover to a disaster site in case of a disaster.

Access Gateway Enterprise

This functionality allows the netscaler to take on some of the features we know from the Access Gateway standard and advanced editions. This includes the feature to allow Secure Gateway connections to your XenApp farm as we used to do with the Secure Gateway product on Windows Server and which we now do even better with Access Gateway.

Besides those features we also have the chance to do some endpoint scanning to do policy based access. To check for Antivirus and other stuff.

Intelligent Load balanding of XenApp WI and XML

As the icing on the cake for us old XenApp, Presentation Server people we finally get intelligent load balancing of WI and XML services. This allows us not only to load balance these by round robin, least connections etc. but it also gives us the opportunity to be proactive. This will allow us not only to load balance several XML brokers, or WI’s but also to have advanced warning.

This means that if one of our XML brokers for some reason starts talking gibberish, it will be taken out of the loop and users will be redirected to other brokers. On top of this the administrator can be alerted and take action so that we dont end up with all our XML brokers down before people start complaining.

All in all, i think Netscaler Standard is actually beginning to look good, even if it is a bit more expensive than the Access Gateway Standard edition
